The purpose of this learning object, "Mining Landscape", is to elucidate how metal, in this case copper, is extracted today. The starting point of the survey is a three-layered copper deposit. The different ores in the layers need to be treated by different metal extraction methods. First will be an explanation of the processes within pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy. Then extra focus will be put on so-called heap bioleaching and the role of microorganisms in metal extraction. A short discussion of by-products and the environmental problem of acid mine drainage will follow. There are different ways to go through the object. One way is to jump between different sections of the object by using the jump buttons. Another way is to "travel" sequentially by using the continue and back buttons. In case you are not familiar with the subject the sequential route is recommended.
