Spanish Pragmatics Tutorial

Spanish Pragmatics Tutorial

The purpose of the tutorial is to teach pragmatic knowledge to students of Spanish at any level. The video clips are first presented in English, which will scaffold novice learners as they move forward in the tutorial. Also by completing discourse completion tasks first in English and then in Spanish, the learners will be able to compare the similarities and differences between English and Spanish regarding the speech acts of requesting and complaining. All of the actors are native- speakers, and the video clips are high in quality. At the end of each lesson, learners will be able to view the entire video in Spanish with text bubbles that point out the pragmatic strategies that the native-speakers use. Learners are also provided with explicit knowledge about how to sound more native-like in Spanish, and they are given a variety of links to help them do so. The lesson ends with a self-assessment. As an added bonus, the learners are given the option of making a video recording of themselves and uploading it to their computers so that they can make a visual and auditory comparison of their discourse completion tasks with those of the native speakers. We believe that by making a video recording, learners are more likely to notice the gap between their production and native-like speech.
