Animated Atlas of African History
The Animated Atlas of African History (AAAH) is an online year-by-year map of selected themes in the history of Africa between 1879 and 2002. The project started in the summer of 2004 when Professor Nancy Jacobs attended the Brown Instructional Technology Groups Summer Institute. Professor Jacobs was looking for the best way to make her students conceptualize colonization and decolonization, post-colonial political developments, conflicts, and economic and demographic changes of the African diversity. A Flash multimedia approach was chosen. The online animation uses the historical data collected and compiled through extensive research. The map is surrounded by a website containing additional resources which make the experience of the history of the times more accurate. The About section of the website highlights the research and representation choices behind the creation of the map. The Help file linked off the map illustrates how the map works.
