ForensicEA is a simulation program that models the evolution of viruses. Using the program a patient is infected with a virus which then multiplies. Over time the virus will mutate and become a population of slightly different viruses. The different viruses are shown as colored dots, but the user can click on any one of the dots to see 100 nt of sequence for that virus. As sequences of different viruses can be compared and new patients can be infected with viruses from the first patient, population genetics with neutral drift and selection can be investigated. The program also has a tree mode where many patients can be studied simultaneously, with a record of the evolutionary relationships between he viruses maintained, so that users can test phylogenetic methods to see if they correctly return the correct tree. This mode can also be used to address forensic cases where the source of an infection needs to be traced.
