Care of the Client with Schizophrenia

Care of the Client with Schizophrenia

In this simulation, the learner is introduced to a client with a medical diagnosis of schizophrenia admitted to the hospital. The nursing assessment includes information about the presenting problem, medical history, social history, curent and past medications, and the mental status. The learner is provided a series of interactive questions (with immediate feedback for right and wrong answers) so that knowledge can be applied. The learning resource is free for use online, although it can be purchased for a nominal fee for use off-line. Although the resource is designed for use by the pre-professional registered nurse, it would be beneficial for licensed practical nursing students and emergency first responders. It could also be used by acute care psychiatric facilities as a component of orientation or continuing education.

I think that this material is appropriate for the beginning levels of undergraduate nursing students. It includes both visual and text although the text size is somewhat small. It follows step-by-step assessment process that nurses are doing in clinical, such as what should be assessed or what are priorities. It also has some interactive exercises such as “Yes or No” question, brief documentation, choosing correct communication for the patient in response to his symptoms. Also, one of the interesting learning is to see patient’s drawing and writing and to learn what the patient is experiencing. Overall, this is well designed except for small text size and same colors and less impressive design.

The case is clearly described. The information is accurate, clear, and consistent. It reflects current knowledge well. This case study covers thorough assessment steps but does not cover or focus on relevant interventions or evaluation strategies. It covers only therapeutic communication skill in response to patient’s hallucination, not the medications and psychosocial interventions. I recommend that this resource should be developed further. The case shows a picture of the patient (male, maybe European American). But, I don’t see any culturally insensitive problems here.

I am a psychiatric mental health nursing faculty. I’m teaching psychiatric mental health nursing for undergraduate nursing students. I am looking for open online clinical case studies as well as offline clinical case studies. I have not used this “Care of the Client with Schizophrenia” simulation case study at present, but I reviewed this for use in the future. After reviewing, I would like to recommend this resource. I would also consider adopting this resource for my class. Below is my detailed review.

This is an excellent learning object on a case study of a schizophrenic patient. Specifically involving the aspect of a thorough assessment, this material provides an excellent example of the mental health profession's approach to caring for a schizophrenic patient. A great way to introduce schizophrenia to students or to exemplify the medical model of psychological treatment.

Technical Remarks:

No problems seen upon several reviews. (The clicking to the next page button is a bit too small and annoying but nothing seriously troubling)

A good learning activity for beginning nursing students studying schizophrenia. I would like to see this developed further for interventions, evaluation, etc. I have not used this at present, but will plan to in the future.

Technical Remarks:

easy to use, requires flash.
