Beyond the Five Rights: Medication Administration Safety is an interactive tutorial which guides to learner in understanding safe medication administration from a system's perspective which includes the 1) Six "rights" for medication administration; 2) Nurses six rights for safe medication administration; 3) the American Hospitals Association (AHA) patients' rights; and 4) the Institute of Medicine (IOM) patient rights. After completing the tutorial the learner should be able to:
  • "Describe and explain various categories of rights pertaining to safe medication administration.
  • Describe and explain various categories of rights pertaining to safe medication administration.
  • Explain how these rights work together to promote patient safety in the context of organizational systems.
  • Using a medication error case, identify which rights were not upheld and analyze how organizational systems affected the actions of the nurse.
This learning resource could be used in class with small group discussion or as a homework assignment in preparation for class discussion. It would be beneficial to nursing students in licensed practical nursing and registered nursing programs.
