2008 Winter Session "Living in Globalized Society"
Currently we live in the era when globalization advances rapidly. Trends of wage standards in China and Vietnam influence Japanese corporationsâ selection of locations and, by extension, make an impact on domestic employment. The decline in American house prices destabilizes financial capital markets both at home and abroad, and further, has control of business trends.
If globalization is referred to as free movements of capital, goods and people crossing national boundaries thereby strengthening the degree of the world unification, this process in the economic field is bringing the Japanese economy into that of the world as an inseparable part, and is greatly changing the state of our nation including activities of Japanese corporations, our economic and social lives as workers and consumers.
This lecture, by focusing on the development of such economic globalization and its impact upon Japan, viewing from several perspectives like capital, goods and people, will clarify positive and negative effects they exert to our nationâs economy and society, and will put thought into the way our nation should be in the epoch of global-scale competition.
