This presentation explains what a protocol is. We will use HTTP, the Web protocol, as an example. There are protocols for many other applications – file transfer, email, and so forth. Protocols are specified in detail and must be standardized so that anyone who wishes can write a client that will work with any server or a server that will work with any client.
