I have had students in my senior cell and molecular biology class read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks since it was first published. I have had students answer and generate questions and explore research techniques discussed in the book and discuss the ethics. They then write a research review paper about the use of cell lines in biomedical research. What I really like abut the about these lesson plans are the addition to the interviews and additional resources and assessment tools. I could see that this would be very beneficial if I were having a lower division biology class read the book as it would provide a lot more additional information to understand the complex issues raised in Rebecca Skloot's book. I will definitely use this resource the next time I teach the course and passed it on to my colleague who is teaching it this semester.
