In celebration of World Teacher’s Day on Oct. 5, Skype in the classroom—the education outreach program of Skype, the Microsoft-owned service for making free voice and video calls online—has announced new partnerships with NASA and seven other organizations.
These new organizations will join more than 38,000 teachers already working together on 1,800 global educational projects through Skype in the classroom, the organization said Oct. 3.
Through its new partnership with Skype in the classroom, NASA’s Digital Learning Center will feature various live projects in which students can learn how to prepare a space vehicle for liftoff, help scientists and engineers explore the basic principles of matter, and design their own spacesuit mission patch. Participating classrooms also will discover what it’s like to live and work in space and will be introduced to basic robotics.
In other new partnerships announced Oct. 3, the National Museum of the Royal Navy will give students an exclusive mini-tour of the HMS Victory ship, taking them aboard Admiral Nelson’s cabin and allowing them to see and discuss rare artifacts related to the trans-Atlantic slave trade; the British Council will help forge connections between schools in developing countries and the rest of the world; and Education through Expedition will be taking classes on a virtual journey to Iceland to teach them about this region, among other projects.

What an exciting way to connect classrooms from across the globe in meaningful collaborative communities of learners! Although the search and navigation features could offer more options in terms of categorizing the classroom collaboration opportunities, there seems to be a wealth of requests for lessons for K-12 teachers in a variety of disciplines.
