This document is a brief guide aimed at Developmental English students who are enrolled in a Social Sciences course that does not require English 101 as a prerequisite. 

The primary assignment objective is as follows:

1) Encourage an appreciate of clear, effective writing necessary for academic and professional situations.

2) Allow students to write clear and grammatically correct prose in edited, formal American English, properly using the parts and applying the rules of formal usage, conventional punctuation, capitalization, and mechanics. 

This guide should assist students in writing a short essay to fulfill the following learning outcomes:

1.  Use pre-writing strategies to generate ideas·

2.  Develop a focused, arguable thesis statement that is consistently supported throughout the essay by relevant textual examples and researched, documented information.·  

3.  Contain organized, well-developed, and unified paragraphs.
