Understaning how information is organized is vital to engaging in the broad information landscape. Here we utilize a popular video-streaming service, HULU, to examine two key functions of any organizing system: search and access.
Learning Objectives:
Search (Evaluating the Function & Limitations of the HULU Search Tool)
Objective #1: After engaging with the HULU search function, students will be able to critically evaluate preliminary search results and identify limitations and improvements in terms of relevance and inconsistency of search results.
Measure(s):
- In-Discussion Activity: Chat board response to prompt question regarding observations of relevance after using the search tool.
- Post-Discussion Activity: Organize/Classify a list of the top 10 results from a basic search in two columns as either relevant or inconsistent, then provide justification for each placement with thoughtful conclusions concerning search limitations and possible improvements.
Access (Distinguishing Types of Access Constraints in the HULU Subscription)
Objective #2: Following the overview of & navigation to various types of content found in HULU, students will be able to identify and describe the constraints on content availability within the basic monthly subscription plan.
Measure(s):
- In-Discussion Activity: Chat board response to identify and discuss features related to access or limitations/motivations for levels of access
- Post-Discussion Activity: Identify at least three distinct constraints on a subscriber’s access to content in HULU, then describe/recognize possible motivations for the existence of each constraint with suggestions for possible solutions.
