Lowell, Massachusetts was the site of the first textile mills constructed in the United States in the first half of the 19th century. The site offers a tour of the history and the mills using original sources and photographs to tell the story of the girls and women who worked the mills. The site is affiliated with the Tsongas Industrial History Center and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell Graduate School of Education. Learning assignments are offerd for grades 8-12 and can be used for survey courses in United States History at the college level. A reference list is provided for additional reading.
