This site allows a student to test their knowledge of pathogenic bacteria by identifying one to four unknowns. Each case reqires the selection and interpretation of appropriate tests.

'I allow faculty at other institutions to use the site for their classes.  Their students can submit the answers to the lab report and questions, and I will grade them and send the results to the faculty.  There are three or four institutions using the Virtual Microbiology Lab other than my own medical student course.

 I see that one criticism is the limited nature of the cases.  That is because the NBME seems to want medical students to know how to differentiate Staphs and Streps by old fashioned culture culture-based techniques.  I have been asked to expand the exercise, and I likely will sometime soon when I get the time.'
