The Strand Map Service (SMS) aims at providing an interactive online interface for use by educators and learners in the K-12 domain. It is collaborating with DLESE (Digital Library for Earth System Education) in order to provide a Strand Maps interface into the resources present in the DLESE collections. Educators and learners will be able to browse the Strand Maps online, and click on benchmarks and resources inside DLESE which align to these benchmarks. They can also read about student misconceptions, related research and aligned NSES standards. A Strand Map* is a visual diagram (map) illustrating inter-related learning goals organized by topics and sub-topics (strands). Learning goals are also called benchmarks. They are carefully crafted descriptions of what learners should know, or be able to do, at key stages of their K-12 education. Strand maps organize the benchmarks and show how the benchmarks both support and depend upon each other. Each map is a compact functional grouping around a topic important to science literacy (e.g. weather and climate). This grouping provides an overview of all K-12 benchmarks for this topic organized into sub-topics called 'strands' which reflect key ideas within this grouping (e.g. heat, water cycle, atmosphere). To browse using the DLESE demonstrator just click "Browse Earth concepts" on the picture on the right after you open the link to this resource.
