Science and Technology/Biology/General (Expert)
Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, Honors in Biology, B.S., awarded the Biology Prize, 1976. Project: Numbers and proportions of microorganisms in humid forest litters.
Science and Technology/Biology/Physiology (Expert)
Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN, Physiology - Ph.D., 1999; Major focus: signal transduction in smooth muscle, Minors: Biochemistry and Education; Thesis: Altered arterial muscle contractility and estrogen protection in spontaneous hypertension.
Education/TeacherEd/Instructional Technology (Advanced)
Supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 0127164, developing a Video and Image Data Access (VIDA) database with annotated science video and images with content and language appropriate for K-6 standards-based science. Using DAG-Edit from the Gene Ontology Consortium to build a dynamic controlled vocabulary that can adapt as life science teaching standards and research-based curricula accumulate or change (Richter and Lewis c2003). The result is a hierarchical scaffold to organize the VIDA collection of images into a cognitive structure appropriate for K-6 science.
