BIO 101/102: General Biology--Cells and Cell Membranes

by TNCC Biology
Bookmark and Share

Description:
This collection focuses on cell and membrane biology.

Authorized users only:

1.

Cells Alive!

Added 07/28/2006
This site provides information about cell organelles and mitosis and some beautiful images. Video and still pictures of various types of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.
2.

The Virtual Cell

Added 07/28/2006
A virtual tour of a cell. Excellent visuals of cell organelle structure
3.

Einstein's Explanation of Brownian Motion

Added 07/28/2006
Simulation of Brownian Motion
4.

Connecting Concepts: Animal Physiology/Signal Transduction

Added 07/28/2006
This excellent turorial explores signal transduction using both a case study and simulations. It contains student activities and self tests. It is part of the University of Wisconsin series.
5.

Cell-ebration

Added 01/29/2007
This site has been created to show students how cells work. It reviews the functions of the cell organelles. This web site focuses on the structure and function of the cell membrane. Students will learn how the organelles interact with each other to keep the cell alive. This web site adds to the knowledge of most middle school students about organelles and expands to how the cell works as a whole. Scientists who study this area are known as cell physiologists. Physiology is the study of the function of living things.
6.

Cell Biology Topics

Added 01/29/2007
Cell Biology Topics is a collection ofimages and text selected from a variety of sources to provide information on a variety of cell topics--mitochondria, membranes, microtubules, clia, flagellae, protein synthesis and sorting of molecules produced within the cell, and the nucleus. There are also several lecture slide presentations on selected topics.
7.

Virtual Cell

Added 01/29/2007
To Quote the site: "Simulation of a single plant cell. In real life it would be very difficult to isolate it like this. But then, this is a virtual cell. As you look around this cell things should look real, however they are models that are only an approximation of the real things. And since we do not want to deceive you, but teach you, we included real electron micrographs. Look at them and keep in touch with reality." The site allows you to explore the cell membrane, chloroplast, thylakoid, mitochondrion, crista and nucleus of a plant cell.
8.

Inside a Cell

Added 01/29/2007
A simple interactive diagram of a cell with nucleus, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, golgi bodies, mitochondria, cytoplasm and cell membrane. Clicking on a part reveals a description of the function of the organelle.
9.

Cell Membranes Problem Set

Added 01/29/2007
This exercise introduces the dynamic complexes of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids that comprise cell membranes. You should learn that membranes are fluid, with components that move, change, and perform vital physiological roles as they allow cells to communicate with each other and their environment. We also show that membranes also are important for regulating ion and molecular traffic flow between cells, and that defects in membrane components lead to many significant diseases.
10.

Animated Cell Membrane

Added 01/29/2007
This site includes an animated presentation of the cell membrane that walks users through the structure and function of individual components. It is an animation that is put together very well and provides a nice visualization of molecular components found in the cell membrane.
11.

Membrane Structure and Function

Added 01/29/2007
This site includes text, pictures, and illustrations to explain cell membrane structure and function.
12.

Construction of the Cell Membrane

Added 01/29/2007
In this activity, users will learn, through building the molecular structure of the cell membrane, the makeup and basis for membrane function.
13.

Biology Animation

Added 01/29/2007
This Website includes interactive learning with animation, movies, and tutorial links. It is created to help in teaching and the learning of science. Topics include basic chemistry, mitosis, meiosis, photosynthesis, and virology.
14.

Membranes and Transport from Botany Online

Added 01/29/2007
This learning object is part of a larger site called Botany Online (http://www.biologie.uni-hamburg.de/b-online/). A good explanation for the structure and function of cell membranes is presented in this section of Botany Online.
15.

Diffusion tutorial

Added 01/29/2007
A collection of java based applets on diffusion, osmosis and diffusion potentials using the Nernst equation.
