Description:
Resources for survey course in biology.

Authorized users only:

1.

Plants in Motion

Added 09/20/2008
Terrific videos of tropic, taxis, and nastic movements. Requires Quicktime.
2.

Evolution

Added 09/20/2008
General evolution materials including videos (housed on PBS).
3.

Connecting Concepts: Plant Biology/Water Relations

Added 09/20/2008
Strong connection to material I cover in plant physiology. Very good tutorials and explanations. This is an excellent ancillary exercise. Requires Flash.
4.

Malaria: Cooperation among Parasite, Vector, and Host

Added 09/20/2008
Basic narrated animation on the life cycle of Plasmodium falciparum and its role in causing malaria.
5.

Virtual Foliage

Added 09/20/2008
High quality plant (and plant related) images. Limitation: insufficient notations in some cases.
6.

The Biology Project: Mendelian Genetics

Added 09/20/2008
Tangentially related to Biol 2130. Provides Mendelian genetics questions and solutions. Wrong answers bounce one to an explanation of each answer and a tutorial for the solution.
7.

Woods

Added 09/20/2008
Competition simulation among three tree species. Broad range of variable control possible. Excellent for class demo and direct student access.
8.

Connecting Concepts: Natural Selection 3: Microevolution: Evolution in a Population

Added 09/20/2008
This offers a very good simulation of the Peppered moth example. The questions at the end provide thorough answers for both correct and incorrect responses. The three scenarios presented in the last question provide very good critical thinking opportunities. Figuring out what is going on and the format for the input is a bit clunky, but perseverance pays off.
9.

Connecting Concepts: Evolution/Species & Speciation 3: Defining Species: 3 Case Studies

Added 09/20/2008
Students evaluate and interpret data for mosquitoes and pumas to determine whether speciation has occurred. Allows variability in student responses. Prompts reconsideration. Requires Flash.
10.

Connecting Concepts: Ecology/Population Dynamics 3: Elephant Population Growth

Added 09/20/2008
Advanced population growth analysis. Could be used for advanced students or I could modify what I cover. Good interpretation questions and hints with math and incorrect answers. Calculate dN/dt, N, 1-(N/K. Requires Flash.
11.

The National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science Case Collection

Added 09/20/2008
Case studies for a broad range of topics. Include material for students and instructors. Access to answer keys requires authentication that takes 3 business days.
12.

Web PopGen

Added 09/20/2008
Hardy-Weinberg simulator. Controls are not entirely intuitive. Help option provides explanations at a fairly sophisticated level. With one population, both allele and genotype frequencies are plotted. Up to five populations may be simulated simultaneously. Requires Flash 5.0 or higher.
13.

Microarrays Curricula and Resources

Added 09/20/2008
Six dry-lab microarray simulations that range in complexity can be found here. Materials are classroom-ready and require no materials beyond photocopies. These activities make an abstract, expensive technique accessible.
