Authorized users only:

Spin the Globe

Added 11/23/2010
Afrobeat and other African music links. Searchable by continent/country.

French through Songs / Chansons francaises et francophones

Added 11/23/2010
MP3's and lyrics for many songs, beginner through contemporary popular songs. "Tout ce que je veux" can be used as a subjunctive exercise (also for some slang). Starting point for research as students can listen to MP3's to see if they like the style before committing to an artist/group.

Enseigner le français langue seconde à l'aide de la musique

Added 11/23/2010
Fair collection of songs to use as auditory practice (fill in the blank or ID the wrong word in the text). Some have clickable links to explain expressions such as "faire dodo" (Le portable de Patrick de Flavard).

Langues de France en Chansons: Regional Music in France and La Francophonie

Added 11/23/2010
Examples of regional songs in dialects such as Breton or Basque. France and the DOM/TOM only (no Africa).
5. Dossiers

Start with Quelles chansons? and go to Chansons et musique francophones to find general and artist-specific sites. Some (such as Nâdiya) have done duets and videos with artists the kids will know, such as Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland or 50cent.

Carole Fredericks Foundation French Resources

Added 11/23/2010
American singer profiled on NPR and in PBS Foreign Language K-12 Workshop; immersed self in French language and culture and became a very well-known singer in Europe (barely known in US). Toured with Jean Jacques Goldman (see YouTube video). Died after a concert in Africa.

Les Africains de la chanson francophone

Added 11/24/2010
Brilliant site. Click on the tree branches to explore the different types of African music and hear selected artists, the roots to discover different styles. Click on the eye for a bibliography and general links. Advanced (level 3 and above) but wonderful resource for teacher to compile list of styles and artists for students to research.
