Websites to teach Biology

Authorized users only:

1.

Cells Alive!

Added 10/24/2012

This website can be very useful in a variety of topics throughout the Living Environment curriculum.  Cell Biology comes up frequenctly in both learning the parts and functions of the cell as well as through cell division.  The website offers many visuals that will help in teaching these topics.  The animations are more helpful than regular pictures because students can see the different processes occur before their eyes.

2.

Biological animations and tutorials

Added 10/24/2012

This website is useful because it is predominately animations.  The usefulness of animations is that the processes occur in real time and can help students understand better.  This website is also helpful because not only does it provide animations for cell biology but also other aspects of the Living Environment curriculum such as evolution.

3.

Mutations and Genetic Information

Added 10/24/2012

This website is extremely useful in teaching mutations.  Mutation is often a difficult topic to understand in the Living Environment curriculum and I believe this website is a good tool in teaching it.  The website has both animations and videos for a better understanding of the topic.  There are many things to explore in the website that will keep the topic fun and interesting.

4.

Simple Flash Punnett Square Activity

Added 10/24/2012

Punnett Squares can be an easy topic to understand, however, for some students it can be difficult.  I believe this website would be extremely helpful because it provides animations on how to fill out a Punnett Square which is important in learning genetics.  The website also poses multiple choice questions for students to answer.

5.

Brine Shrimp Hatching Lab

Added 11/03/2012

This website is very helpful because it provides an opportunity to teach Ecology through the Scientific Method and environmental changes.  This could be a good introduction to the ecology unit.  It is also a lab which is important in the New York State Living Environment Curriculum.  By utilizing a lab to teach these topics, students will be able to understand the material better because they will have hands on exposure to the material.
