This collection contains multiple biology websites that contain interactive simulations and demonstrations of difficuly biology topics.

Authorized users only:

Understanding Evolution

Added 12/05/2012

This resource provides links to different lessons that go into primary concepts about evolution and the fossil record. The lesson are interactive in which the students click on pictures to reveal key concepts that are shown in each picture. Such lesson include how vertebrates evolved over the geologic time scale and how wem determine these characters from the fossil record. The website is very useful as it provides inquiry based questions and requires higher blooms level of thinking.

Biologica: a systems approach to learning science

Added 12/05/2012

This website includes interactive #D models of cells that demonstrate the processes that go on in a cell. Allows for a very visual and interactive demonstration of how cells work. The 3D cell maps allow you to click on different organelles for descriptions and even watch videos on how they work. This resource can be immensely valuable because it allows a teacher to show the cell organelles in an inquiry type of simulation. This is helpful because as a teacher, cells can be an incredibly difficult topic to teach without these visuals because of the fact you cant actually see cells via the human eye.

The Virtual Genetics Lab

Added 12/05/2012

This website allows you to downlaod thier software that supplies an interactive simulation of genetics and acquired traits. The software is phenominal as it allows you to play with variables such as the sex ratio, dominance, and ratio of a trait in the population. All this is done in a simulation that upon running, will demonstrate how these different traits will be passed down and in what frequencies we predict traits to be seen in the population. The software also comes packed with notes on every concept you need for background information to teach. Upon teaching a lesson on genetics or the punett square, this software can easily demonstrate what you have taught if you bring it up on the blackboard and allow the students to set the parameters of all the variables.

Classification of Living Things

Added 12/05/2012

If ever teaching about vertebrates and the evolution of vertebrates, this resource can be helpful as it outlines the principles of Linnean classification and taxonomy. When trying to demonstrate how the classification system works, this website provides the different levels of classification and the students can use it to locate where humans fall. Not only can it be interactive in that sense, but it also contains lots of references and pictures to popular animals and insects that can make this learning experience fun.
