The Rise of Gamification and eSports in Higher Education: [EDAD 6580]

Tennessee State University: Instructor Dr. Robbie Melton and Co-Instructor Dr. Effua Ampadu Explore and Experiment Open Educational Resource Course. 

 The Nature of the Course:  This online course examines a wide variety of eSportgames and the importance of Gamification in Higher Education across all disciplines (Education, Business, Psychology, Health Sciences, STEM, Communication, Student Services, Creative Arts, etc.). The E in eSports is for education and in this course, we will connect gaming with the world of academia. Moreover, we will examine how the gaming world and how it introduces students to the importance of group work, competitiveness, strategic thinking, spatial skills, and self -expression. The principles of eSports which are integrity, well-being, fair play, respect, and positive enrichment will help students become world leaders and strategic thinkers through daily skill development of gameplay. This course will research the connection between eSports gamification and the world of Higher Education through interactive play. In the class, the student will use their own SMART technologies for eSporting play. The devices that can be used is a mobile device, console, or computer. This course will include guest presenters and players from across eSports.

This course explores the role, style and function of leaders in the context of education.  The course studied the exploration and experimentation of gamification and eSports. The Exploration and Experimentation theories give Gamification and eSports new and efficient new ways to teach and connect with students in Higher education. The course went over leadership and leadership styles of well-known leaders in the world of Gamification and eSports were examined.  These high performing leaders act with integrity, fairness and honesty, in an ethical manner.  They understand, respond to, and influence the personal, political, social, economic, legal, and cultural relationships in the Higher education community. 


This open textbook course being utilized in Educational Technology Department targeted towards Business and industry leaders who are students got the chance to find the importance of gamification and eSports in education. The course by Dr. Robbie Melton and co instructor Dr. Effua Ampadu at Tennessee State University was a success. The open textbook provides opportunity to students to start class on time because the materials were free too students. The main motivation to adopt an open textbook course was to create an quality, equal and free opportunity to all students.
