Mean, Median, and Mode

For the students to have mastery of the concepts regarding measures of central tendency. The students will also become familiar with applications for manipulating decimals.
Course: Pre-Algebra

Ask the students a few ( four maximum) questions. Gather and organize the data. Have the students decide which data set to use. Then each group (no more than three) can assign someone to the find the mean, median, and mode. Have each group make predictions and give a short presentation.

Technical Notes

Students will need pencils, paper, markers and poster paper for working through the lesson and doing a presentation.

Students must be able to order data. Also the students must be able to manipulate decimal numbers.(to edit)

Introduce the idea of "central tendency". Define new terms. Show how to find the mean, median, and mode. Discuss the "best" measure to use and when.

Learning Objectives

1.2 Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals.(to edit) refer to state standards!!!

The presentations were used as an assessment tool. Each group was asked questions and they interpreted their data and made some conclusions.
