Understanding Automated DNA Techniques

Students will perform a virtual lab that encompasses identifying a bacterium using a small sample of DNA. They will use the automated Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique to amplify the sample, use a gene sequencer to determine the nucleotide sequence, and compare the results to a DNA database to identify the organism.

Exercise

Students will log on to the site using the computers in the lab. They will
perform the virtual lab as if it were a ?hands on? lab experiment. They will
prepare a lab report following the same guidelines as any other lab. Reports
will be due the following lab period.

Students are required to understand the basics of DNA replication and the nucleotide sequence of genes.
