Academic Vocabulary

Rating: 4 stars
Used in Course: Not used in course
Submitted by: Amy Varano (Student), Mar 18, 2008
Comment: In this growing world of teaching and learning across cultures, the site Academic Vocabulary is a useful resource for both educators and students. This site gives commonly used vocabulary in the American language and is clearly formatted and accessible through the Academic Word List (AWL). Some valuable features of this site are the AWL Highlighter, AWL Gapfill Exercise, and Concordances. These activities are simple to use and appropriate for middle, high school and college level students who wish to learn academic word usage.

Technical Remarks:

This site declares that an individual will improve their academic vocabulary usage and writing by completing the exercises on this website. These exercises are beneficial and will provide the student with vocabulary improvement if used correctly, however there is no standards or criteria for the students to meet. For example, in regards to academic writing the author said “If there are only a few academic words, you will know that you need to add more”. From a student’s perspective, what classifies as a few? What classifies as enough? I think suggesting an objective or target number of academic words to add to a writing sample for each grade level would be helpful for the student and a way for them to reflect on what they know and where they would like to academically see themselves.
