This is a downloadable, 44 page document based on the Kenneth W Thomas book about conflict and conflict management published in 1976. It presents some questions to help evaluate where a person stands in current negotiating skills. The full citation is available in the document. A course number is listed (N101), and the content appears to be a summary of the key points of that book.

Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The content is very focused on the different aspects of negotiation. There are details about conflicting styles, negotiating strategies, negotiating styles, team building, bargaining techniques, negotiations and power sources within organizations.
There is a lot of information that is presented in this material. It does ask the learner questions to help determine the level of understanding they have on negotiating and what their skill levels may currently be at.
Concerns:
The material layout seems to be mismatched. Some of it looks like it was a part of a PowerPoint and the other seems like areas that could be from an online lecture. Felt like unless you had some understanding the material was hard to follow and fully understand.
Since this is taken from a book that was published in 1976, users should be aware that there is more recent information available and perhaps more recent research that could be used. Having said this, the book upon which this presentation is based is still a good resource.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The details and applications as they relate to negotiation can be highly beneficial. The document begins by asking questions (quiz), and ends by asking questions. These may potentially be used for pretest and post test information and student reflection following completion of the reading.
There are a lot of terms in regards to different styles and strategies in negotiation. Provides some examples of different strategies and has some graphics (charts) to go with it
Concerns:
This would be hard to integrate into an intro level course unless the lecture prior discusses these concepts to get students use to what goes on in negotiation strategies. Unless there is prior knowledge it may be hard to learn this information in a short amount of time in order to be effective.
While reading can be an effective way to use this presentation, discussions about the content are recommended because various individuals will have different perceptions and reading may not be adequate to address different viewpoints and concerns.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
This is very easy to use because it is easy to read and easy to understand, provided students have adequate preparation as noted previously. Diagrams and questions are included with the information.
Concerns:
The tool is not visually appealing. It looks like two different formats (PowerPoint and MS word documents for example) The “slides” are not easy to follow with the rest of the material and is hard to follow alone without a lecture to go with it or previous knowledge
Other Issues and Comments:
Including the terms is helpful and informational. Also the way that there are some examples on what is meant by the different strategies is also helpful.
