This site provides a variety of information about different math topics. It includes online calculators, graphing tools, and math cracks.
Type of Material:
This site can be used by students who want to learn certain types of math problems or by instructors who need a good source of in class demonstration tools.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Students can use tutorials, solvers, and graphing tools to solve different kinds of mathematical problems.
Target Student Population:
Students in different levels and mathematical subjects.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Depends on the topic chosen.
This site is designed as a collection of different tutorials, solvers, and graphing tools that are organized by four subjects: Algebra, Calculus, Probability, and Statistics. The number of topics covered in these subjects is quite extensive. The majority of the tools and solvers provide a step-by-step explanation of a worked problem that is very helpful to students.
The site would benefit from a finer classification of tools. For example, some of the Calculus tools would show up under Algebra group, etc. There are no tools for limits, derivatives or integrals, so the “Calculus tools” menu is a misnomer. In the Permutation Calculator activity, one of the explained steps uses “nCk” instead of “nPk”. This will be very confusing to the student. Also, the function grapher just give a Parse Error and cannot graph functions
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
This site is an excellent aid to a student who wants to learn certain types of math problems. It can be used as a part of self-guided activity. An instructor can use this site as a rich source of the tools for in-class demonstrations or suggest them to students working on homework assignments or projects.
The errors and bugs could be misleading and frustrating to students who are working on their own.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
The site is uses a convenient navigation and an eye pleasing design. A top menu bar gives quick access to frequently used tools and to an author’s choice of material, which is very helpful. An average user can start working on the site immediately. The flow of the activities is natural and the explanations are well presented.
The presence of ads is distractive for anybody who is trying to use the site.
