This is a combined audio/Powerpoint presentation that introduces students to binary math and how to decipher IP addresses. It also goes into subnetting. The site is divided in several modules, taking the lesson from easy to diffcult levels.
Type of Material:
An audio presentation with Powerpoint slides.
Recommended Uses:
I would recommend this material as part of an introductory networking class, if it is included late in the semester, or as part of a second semester networking class.
Technical Requirements:
Audio is the main mode of instruction though the slides provide some of the text. Students would need to have a sound card and speakers to hear the audio portion.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
The major learning goals are: - Identifying octets and how binary math is used to do this - Describing what is meant by an IP address - Describe how subnetting is used to assign Internet hosts
Target Student Population:
The target student population would be college students who have some background in data communications/networking but it is not absolutely necessary. The lessons begin at a very low level so a student with no background could easily grasp the concept.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Students should have some prior knowledge of networks. An introductory networking course would be sufficient as a prerequisite but not necessary.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The presentation is very well done. Content is excellent. The audio portion adds additional content to that shown on the slides.
Concerns:
The site has a commercial side to it and some of the graphics to the lefto f the website are a bit distracting to the reader. However, this does not take away from the learning process or value of the site.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This site includes not only the presentation, but also some quizzes for the students to take, along with answers. The quizzes could be assigned as a pre-test before the material is presented to determine if the students have the prerequisite knowledge for the IP addressing section.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The site is very easy to use. As long as a student understands how to run a RealAudio Player, they will have no problem with this presentation. It is possible to pause the material and then resume, or to quit and restart from the beginning quite easily.
Concerns:
Students are not able to "go back" in the presentation, they can only pause it or start it from the beginning.
Other Issues and Comments:
This is an excellent site. I would recommend it to anyone who needs to teach this concept in their network/data communications course. It can be used in a variety of ways; as part of the curriculum or as a supplement. Caution: There is a fee involved if used as part of a course.
