At least three months of Chinese learning or equivalent background.
The 22 lessons in this web site consist of video clips of many practical aspects of daily life such as asking questions, meeting a friend, at a market place, etc. The audio-video quality is excellent, and the topics are suitable for learning simple conversations. The texts are presented in Chinese characters, Pinyin, and English for listening and speaking practice. The length of each lesson is appropriate for the beginning-intermediate level. The grammar, vocabulary, and character sections help students to review what they have learned. In particular, the animation, stroke order, radical, and sound of each character are useful tools for practicing character writing and pronunciation.
The radical of each character should be animated as well. The grammar and vocabulary in each lesson should be linked to their respective indices so that the dialog presented is fully annotated. Having more than just one speaker in each dialog would make the listening and speaking section more user friendly. The Multiple Choice section should be labeled Vocabulary Test or Reading Comprehension to more accurately reflect the contents of the section.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
This site is a good learning module to supplement classroom teaching. It provides different scenes and situations that help put the vocabulary and grammar in context. Students can choose their own lessons and learn at their own pace.
Incorporating additional exercises in each lesson would make this site a more effective teaching/learning tool. The character index does not seem to consist of all the characters presented in the lessons.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
This multimedia site is engaging,
and the images and sound are clear. The site is easy to navigate, and the instructions are clear.
The loading time for some files may be long. Users can get trapped in the Character index because there is no link from character illustration back to the main page of the index.
