This web site provides online readings at the beginning and intermediate levels, with the advanced level still under construction. Users can choose the readings in either the HTML or GB format, and they can also listen to the audio of each reading passage. There are 80 lessons at each level, and each lesson is accompanied by questions for the users to practice their reading comprehension.
Supplemental readings for college students and other learners of beginning, intermediate, and advanced Chinese.
Web browsers such as Internet Explorer v.5 or higher, QuickTime plug-in for audios, and NJStar Chinese word processor for questions and texts in GB files.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Reading comprehension at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.
Target Student Population:
Beginning, intermediate, and advanced learners of Chinese.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Chinese reading proficiency at all levels.
The readings cover various topics at all levels with a mixture of original texts and authentic materials from the web, newspapers, and other media. Each reading passage is accompanied by an audio file for listening comprehension. In the GB files, learners have access to various tools such as pinyin, a built-in dictionary, enlargement of Chinese characters, and a choice between traditional and simplified characters. Although some texts are difficult for the learners at the designated level, learners can look up meanings through NJStars online dictionary.
Online word annotation is only available in a registered version of NJStar.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
The reading passages can be used as homework assignments to supplement class readings. Students can read at their own pace and work on the questions. During the reading process, they will also learn Chinese culture and various phenomena in the Chinese society.
There is no online feedback for the answers to the questions, and there should be more questions for each reading passage.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Navigation is simple, and the lessons and their corresponding questions and audios are listed clearly in the table of contents. The HTML version of the readings does not require any special software and is readily accessible. Audio files and questions are also conveniently accessible from the web page of each lesson.
There is no link on each reading page to bring the user back to the main page and/or the table of contents. The pages should also include some graphics or colors to make them more engaging.
