Merchandising Firms is the 10th and final tutorial available at this web site for principles of financial accounting. The module focuses on terminology and debit and credit analysis for the purchase and sale of inventory by a merchandising firm that uses a perpetual inventory system. A brief account identification interactive session appears at the end of the tutorial.
Type of Material:
Tutorial/lecture presentation
Recommended Uses:
Independent study outside of class to reinforce examples given in a text.
Technical Requirements:
Internet Explorer (5.0 or higher) browswer only
Identify Major Learning Goals:
After reading the tutorial, students will understand the terminology and journal entries associated with purchasing and selling of inventory. A problem is demonstrated, followed by a small set of related questions with solutions.
Target Student Population:
Students enrolled in introductory principles of accounting at the high school or undergraduate level.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Completion of previous modules, particularly Cash Discounts and basic accounting terminology is required.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Information is accurate to the extent provided. Has one nice comparative slide.
Concerns:
The demonstration is rather labored and lengthy for the content provided. Integration is lacking, particularly for the sales section. Concepts are not summarized well and the interactive session merely requires account definitions instead of requiring responses to a numerical problem. The module is not self-contained in that additional practice beyond that provided by the tutorial is needed for students to grasp the concepts. Existing textbook materials cover this content better.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Students are walked though examples methodically and then provided with a moderately interactive session. Feedback is provided and students cannot move forward until they answer a question correctly.
Concerns:
No objectives exist.
The tutorial is equivalent to a lecture with very moderate interactivity.
Assessment activity does not assess mastery of the content presented.
Sales segment of the income statement which includes sales returns, allowances and discounts is not reviewed.
Progression seems odd, beginning with the Cost of Goods Sold section.
All feedback for incorrect responses is the same.
The first question on the interactive set is ambigous.
Teaching the purchase side of inventory should be presented separately from the sales side of inventory. Students are likely to be confused by the two sides of the sale presented interchangeably.
Tutorial is not very efficient given the number of slides, slow pace, and deficient interactive assessment provided.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The module is easy to use, but disappointing compared to the other tutorials in the 10 series sequence.
Concerns:
Navigation is deficient and controlled by the software. One cannot go back to a prior slide in the interactive section.
Pace is too slow. It is difficult to go through the slides quickly if someone wants to look at only a portion of the module.
Slides aren't numbered and one can easily get lost.
The layout is basically large font on a blue background meant to be read.
Interactivity is minimal.
