Evaluation and Observation
The content found in this online exercise book is clear and concise. The problems included demonstrate a core concept grounded in the accounting discipline which is both current and relevant. The content of the problems is accurate. Usage is flexible in that the problems could be used for in-class practice or as homework assignments. The problems do help to develop a deeper understanding of the managerial topics addressed and could be used to apply material from lecture or chapter readings. Worksheets and answers are provided. Most of the problems can be used with any textbook.
Although the problems are well developed, no explanation of the concepts has been included within the module. The problems must be used within the context of learning cost-volume-profit concepts. As a result, the exercise book is not self-contained. While the problems do not summarize the concept well, they could be used to demonstrate the application of important topics from a lecture or textbook reading.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
The module could be used as a guide for developing similar assignments. When used for practice applying concepts taught/learned from lecture, the exercises are quite efficient. Although the authors do not explain the relationships among the concepts, once the problems have been completed or reviewed, the relationship between concepts could be inferred. Some of the problems require short answers in addition to computations.
The module does not identify the learning objectives nor identify prerequisite knowledge. The online workbook simply provides additional problems for use that would supplement problems found in any text.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
The online book is easily downloaded. The instructions for each problem are clear. Worksheets are provided to help users structure their responses.
When printed, the problems simply become worksheets with more questions. Individual instructor modifications cannot be made as the online book is locked. The advertisements interspersed among the problems are distracting and would needlessly waste paper and ink.
Although the module involves problem solving, it provides the answers to the problems in a non-interactive and non-engaging way. When used for homework, the instructor would have print copies for use in class, minus the solution, in order to prevent students from merely looking at the answers.
