This YouTube video, prepared by Alison Riley, demonstrates some issues to consider in the consolidation of a parent and a subsidiary using the acquisition method. The module only considers a 100% acquisition of a subsidiary. The module mentions the equity method but does not adequately demonstrate how the investment account is revised. As a result, the module has limited use.
Type of Material:
Presentation
Recommended Uses:
In class, introductory lecture, or outside of class for self-study.
Technical Requirements:
HTML/Text
Identify Major Learning Goals:
To understand the consolidation of parent and subsidiary using the acquisition method.
Target Student Population:
College upper division
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Basics of financial accounting and financial statements; knowledge of the equity method (probably not encountered unless one has taken an Intermediate accouting course).
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The module demonstrates a core concept of the accounting discipline that is both current and relevant. Information presented is accurate. However, the content included is very limited.
Concerns:
Although the module is concise (9:38 minutes), its brevity impacts clarity. As a result, the module is confusing. It focuses on only two eliminations and would need additional material and activities to be thorough. The presentation also does not summarize or integrate the concept very well and is not particularly flexible in terms of use. It really only offers a summary of a rather complicated concept.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Important learning objectives are identified. For the limited content presented, the organization, focus and flow of the presentation are good. Concepts are presented progressively and demonstrate relationships between concepts to some extent. The presentation may be useful for students who are audio learners.
Concerns:
Prerequisite knowledge is not identified (.e., the equity method). Based on the content required to understand consolidations, the presentation does not provide adequate information to enable students to grasp the concept in a short time. Students will learn some theory, but the bullet points could just as easily be found in a textbook summary of the topic.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
This You-Tube video is an audio enhanced PowerPoint presentation that might be useful as a way to introduce the topic. Although limited in use, the presentation provides a simple example and has reasonably clear instructions. The pace of the audio is good and the author supplements the text on the slides rather than just reading them to the audience. Clarity of focus is consistent when enlarged to full-screen. Closed captioning is also available for the hearing impaired.
Concerns:
The primary drawback to the presentation involves a lack of engagement and interactivity. The author appears to be reading a script and lacks enthusiasm. The layout of the slides could be improved. The amount of text per slide is excessive giving a cluttered appearance.
