This task challenges a student to use knowledge of number patterns and operations to identify and extend a pattern. A student is given a sequence of diagrams of hexagons in a row using toothpicks and must predict the number of toothpicks needed for a specific number of hexagons. This task was developed by the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service and administered as part of a national, normed math assessment. Related materials, including the scoring rubric, student work, and discussions of student understandings and misconceptions on the task, are included in the task packet.
