Community Helpers Unit

We began our unit on community helpers by reading books about community helpers.  Some of the books we read included: Whose Hat Is This?, Mat Man's Hats, Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do, and I Want to Be a Police Officer.

A police officer came to visit our classroom.  He showed us many of the tools he uses while he works and gave us each our own hat.

We used our police hats and police tape to be "Police Detectives" in the dramatic play center.  We also used notepads and magnifying glasses to look for clues.

We sorted pictures of tools that community helpers use.  We talked about the tools that dentists, doctors, firefighters, police officers, and veterinarians use.

We did a fun art project when we learned about dentists.  Dentists help brush away the germs on teeth, so we used real tooth brushes to paint white teeth.

At the end of our unit, we concluded our learning by writing about what we want to be when we grow up.  The children want to be: police officers, firefighters, dentists, teachers, ballerinas, and princesses!
