Introduction

I am Selena Shires, a second semester junior at the University of Southern Indiana. I am a Food and Nutrition with a Dietetics concentration and I do not have a minor. I plan to graduate from USI in 2023 and then attend Murray State for my Master's Degree in either Food Science or Psychology and then start my career as either a clinical dietitian or a nutritionist, specializing in patients with eating disorders and other various eating or feeding disorders. I would like to work in either a hospital environment or my own practice.

Mission Statement

My overall goal after graduating from USI  is to provide a more comfortable and more compassionate way to recover from eating disorders. Doctors aren't experts in nutrition and hospitals are intimidating, I want to help and educate people who struggle while taking the negative stigma from eating disorders away from the path to recovery.

School Goals: To graduate from USI with a Bachelor's Degree in Food and Nutrition and attend Murray State for a Master's Degree in either Food Science or Psychology

Career Goals: To become a consultant dietitian and provide a pathway to recovery from various eating disorders

1. Demonstrate Knowledge of Nutrition as is applies to food and Assessing the role that behavior, economics, and dietary supplements have on planning and eating healthy diets. (Discussed in Nutrition 203, Introduction to Food and Nutrition.)

Research Experience/Expectations and Results

High School 2014-2018

2014- Research paper written in a Freshman health class over various eating disorders and the stigma behind them. 

2016- Research paper written in a sophomore health class over the relationship between eating disorders and anxiety disorders and OCD.

2017- Research paper/presentation written in a current health issues class over Bulimia and Anorexia Nervosa.

2018- Research papers/presentations in senior anatomy lectures and psychology classes over the various health risks of eating disorders, their mortality rates and other statistics.

2019- Introduction to Health and Fitness class research assignments and journals (Written about a daily exercise routine and its health benefits that we added to our day.

2020- Leaders in Organic Chemistry and Food and Nutrition, Justus Von Liebig.

2020- Self-Assessment Paper. Written to make my career path goals more clear. Where would I like to see myself in 5 to 10 years, where would I like to be working, who would I like to work with and why did I choose to study Food and Nutrition.
