Abstract: This open textbook is being utilized in a special education course for graduate students by Dr. Nam at CSUSB. The main motivation to adopt an open textbook was that my students have easy access to the textbook at no cost. Most student access the open textbook through internet.
Reviews: The book has been reviewed by faculty from within the three segments (CCC, CSU, and UC) of the California higher education systems.

Description: Particularly, the three journals, Teaching Exceptional Children, Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship (JOSEA), and Preventing School Failure have been helpful to identify peer review articles. Articles (full text) of the journals are accessible through Pfau Library. In addition, OER sites such as CEEDAR Center are utilized to identify appropriate learning materials.
Formats: Students can access modules notes through Bb course site; weekly readings through ERIC or other OER sites, journal articles through our library, One Search.
Supplemental resources: I created 10 modules including module note, weekly readings, and learning activities.
Cost savings: The hard copy textbook, Instruction for Students with Severe Disabilities, costs about $100 at Amazon. The number of students enrolled has been about 30 annually. The total saving annually for student is about $3,000.
Accessibility statement: Yes, the OER used is readily available and affordable for students.
The majority of my students are employed as classroom assistants or substitute teachers. They are also working with families. The OER sources and instructional strategies support my students who are working in schools.
ESPE662: Methods for Students with M/S Disabilities I
Description: Characteristics of students with moderate to severe disabilities and their implications for education; assessments for positive behavior support, instructional planning and progress monitoring; evidence based instructional strategies for communication, social skills, and the core curriculum. Formerly ESPE 651.
Prerequisites: ESPE 610 and 611. (4 units)
Learning outcomes: Students are able to utilize a variety of OER that would be helpful for their continuing professional development. No changes in grade or retention rate. The change has been gradual for many several years so there was no dramatic student responses.
Curricular changes: I changed my textbook, syllabus, and content modules for this adoption. I created 10 modules including module note, weekly readings, and learning activities.

OER Adoption Process
I have been interested in improving the learning materials and customizing materials to meet our student needs. Our students require practical applications of educational research and evidence-based practices. A traditional textbook cover a wide range of topics and detailed information to serve a greater number of readers. Customizing learning materials serve better to meet our students’ needs. I was also motivated by saving students money.
I have been developing my lecture notes by reviewing textbook chapters, OER sites, and professional journal articles. My lecture notes, instructional articles, and OER sites appropriate for the topics of the course. Dr. Nam is a tenured full-time professor at California State University, San Bernardino in the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, and Counseling since Sept 2006. He is a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA). His teaching and research interests include Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, Pivotal Response Treatment, Augmentative Alternative Communication methods. He teaches Supportive Learning Environments for Students with disabilities (ESPE 612) and Methods for Students with Severe Disabilites (ESPE 662 and 663).
