Planning for a Storm/Snow/Pandemic Day

Assumption:  Students in the class all have internet access as they class is hybrid.  They are in their third year of a teacher preparation program, spending several hours per week in a K-5 classroom.

Professional Teaching Standard: 2L) demonstrates fluency in technology systems, uses technology to support instruction and enhance student learning, and designs learning experiences to develop student skills in the application of technology appropriate to the disciplines;

The Lesson

Students will search MERLOT to discover 3 sites that could be useful in their assigned classroom.  For each site they will note the following:

  1. The name of the site
  2. The URL where the site can be found
  3. The appropriate grade level(s) for that site
  4. The area of mathematics instruction (including the state standard) that is addressed in the site
  5. A brief (1 paragraph) description of the site and its use
  6. Pluses and minuses of the site.  Include, for example:
    1. How recently the site has been updated
    2. The validity of the site (Who created it?  Is it accurate?)
    3. The interactivity (Will students interact with the site?)
    4. Are there ads on the site?  Are they suitable for youngsters?

After completing this annotation for each of the three sites, the student will create a Bookmark Collection of the sites, and select one of the sites and prepare a lesson plan for using that particular site in his or her setting.  The class lesson plan template should be used and link to their bookmark collection should be copied.

Assessment:  Students will submit (via email) an exit slip indicating :

  • What sites they discovered
  • Which site they chose for their lesson plan
  • A link to their Bookmark Collection
  • Lesson plan
