PHIL 190-10: Introduction to Philosophy 

Abstract: This collection of open Philosophy journal articles is being utilized in a Philosophy course for undergraduate undeclared Freshmen and Sophomore students by Eric Bayruns García at California State University, San Bernardino. The collection of articles offers students up to date information from the Philosophy industry. The main motivation to adopt OERs was relieve the financial concern many of my students face. Most student access the OERs in PDF format on Blackboard.

About the Course

PHIL 190-10: Introduction to Philosophy 

Description:  This course’s aim is to introduce philosophy to students who have little or no familiarity with the subject. This course will attempt to cover some of the more important texts in philosophy and its subdisciplines. Each of its subdisciplines roughly concerns certain questions. Some of these questions are: What is knowledge? How do I gain knowledge? What is consciousness? What about the brain makes cold, hot, sweet or sour objects feel or taste as they do? What is the right thing to do? How should society’s wealth be distributed? Is race real? This course also aims to foster the student’s ability to critically engage with texts and their ability to write clear expository prose. 

Prerequisites: There are not any prerequisites for Introduction to Philosophy.

OER Adoption Process

The main motivation to adopt a set of OERs was to relieve the financial concern many of my students face. I spoke with other faculty to see what they were doing and browsed OER sites myself until I found one that I thought was a good fit for my class. Once I identified the right OER resources, I evaluated them that were available to see how they might contribute to my course.

Student feedback about using OER:  Students remarked on the first day of class that they appreciated that the texts would be free.

I am a Philosophy professor at the California State University, San Bernardino. I teach Epistemology, Latin, American Philosophy, Introduction to Ethics

Introduction to Philosophy, Philosophy of Hip Hop, Philosophy of Race, Social Epistemology.

I specialize in philosophy of race and epistemology. I focus on epistemological questions raised by race and racial injustice.I also work on the nature of race concepts and categories and the degree to which, if any, we are disposed to categorize each other using them. I also have teaching interests in Latin American philosophy, philosophy of hip hop, ethics, social-and-political philosophy, philosophy of mind and philosophy of cognitive science.
