What's that bird?

Coal tit

The coal tit looks a lot like the other types of tit, but he’s a lot less colourful, and smaller than the great tit. He likes to eat insects, berries, nuts and seeds. The coal tit is really a forest bird, but you can spot him in parks and gardens too.

How to recognise a coal tit

A coal tit’s head is black and white. They have a clear white spot on the back of their neck. No other kind of tit has that spot, so it’s a good clue to tell the coal tit apart! The coal tit has a white or grey belly and a brownish grey back. They aren’t as colourful as other kinds of tit. Their beak is very small and thin.

Size: 11 cm

Sound: the coal tit usually repeats two notes. He sounds a bit like a great tit, but faster.

Did you know?

Many species of bird look a little bit different across the world. For example, in Ireland, the coal tit has just a bit of yellow in his white parts. See if you can spot it!
