Mountains

A mountain is an elevated raise in the Earth's surface. It is formed by earthquakes, soil erosion and volcanic activity that occurred over millions of years.  The highest mountain in the world is Mount Everest. Mount Everest belongs to the Himalayas. The Himalayas is a group of mountains, a group of mountain is called a range. The highest point of the mountain is called the peak or summit.

Mount Everest is covered with snow and ice because of it altitude. Mountains in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean are not that high. 

Blue Mountain Peak is Jamaica's highest mountain. It is one of the highest mountains in the Caribbean. Blue Mountain Peak is known for its farming of coffee and rare plants.

Ranges

There are four (4) mountain ranges in Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad has a Northern, Central and Southern Range. Tobago has a Central Range.


Northern Range

The Northern Range spans the north east to north west of Trinidad. The northern range is the Trinidad's highest range. Its highest peaks are El Cerro del Aripo and El Tucuche. They measure over 900m high. Map of Northern Range

Central Range

The Central Range is in central Trinidad. The tallest mountains in this range are Mount Tamana (307m), Mount Harris and Brigand Hill. This mountain range is filled with many different species of birds and monkeys. 


Southern Range

The Southern Range has many different hills. It is located in the Southern part of Trinidad. The highest hill measures 300m. Legend has it that Christopher Columbus saw three tall hills on his voyage to Trinidad. The three hills reminded him of the Holy Trinity which inspired him to name this island, "La Trinidad".

Hills

A hill is a raised area of land. The surrounding land around the hill is lower. 

Hills are like mountains but they are not as high.

In Trinidad, the San Fernando Hill stands 192 metres high. The hill is used as a lookout now.

Paramin Hills in Trinidad

The hills of Paramin are known as the herb capital of the country. Farming of green seasoning (thyme, chadon beni and parsley) is grown here. Paramin is also known for its parang.
