Institute for Inclusive Teaching Excellence Program

The Center for Teaching and Learning's (CTL) goal is to support high quality online/blended instruction that improves students’ experiences, academic success, and timely progress to graduation through a broad organizational approach that embeds quality assurance (QA) into our campus culture. The CTL has helped guide this work to better integrate faculty development, pedagogy, technology, and context in alignment with QA efforts, GI2025, CSU Priority 5, and Humboldt’s strategic plan. Associated programming guides the design of course structures, artifacts, technology, and pedagogy informed by the Quality Learning and Teaching (QLT) instrument.

Goal of the Institute for Inclusive Teaching Excellence

The CTL’s Institute for Inclusive Teaching Excellence is an annual program that supports educators in reimagining teaching and students’ learning through an equity lens, while engaging in a community of practice that draws upon the strengths, opportunities, and perspectives of colleagues. The Institute begins with a three-day summer immersive experience to set the stage for the year-long program aimed at cultivating the critically reflective educator through engagement in course transformation across modalities.

Institute Outcomes

  • Identify an action plan with stated inclusive excellence outcomes that draw upon an equity lens
  • Create a draft plan for iterative assessment of student success measures
  • Document the mindful integration of 21st century technology to support teaching and learning excellence
  • Engage with colleagues across disciplines: present, provide feedback
  • Critically reflect on one’s growth in the program
  • Share your project at the CTL 4th Annual Teaching Excellence Symposium in Spring 2023

During the 22/23 academic year, Institute participants engaged in a monthly learning community session intended to provide time to work on their course plans, as well as engage in collegial feedback. Sessions included explorations and discussions through resources such as the Course Action Plan Template, Humboldt Inclusive Teaching Guide, Course Equity Ratio Report, and the Teaching Development Plan where educators considered the question: What problem are you trying to address and how is your action plan working toward inclusive student success? In addition, each educator engaged in a feedback option of their choice, including collegial observation, Mid-Semester Feedback (student feedback), and QLT Peer Review, as well as at least one consultation with a CTL staff member to go through their course plan and prepare for their Digital Showcase presentation at the Teaching Excellence Symposium.

Sixteen educators across 12 departments participated in the Institute for Inclusive Teaching Excellence.  Their culminating experience was to join other campus educators in presenting their work at the Center for Teaching & Learning 4th Annual Teaching Excellence Symposium: Reimagining Teaching and Learning Excellence.

See the CTL Teaching Excellence Symposium Digital Showcase for a look at their specific projects that explicate inclusiveness.
