Rob Gray ENGL 1010 Introduction to Writing

About the Textbook

Description:

I created a Press Book using adopted materials: https://uen.pressbooks.pub/catalog/d00107539. The textbook I used to use is an out-of-print edition of How to Write Anything by John Ruszkiewicz. The cost of this textbook used for students was about $35, so in this fall section, students saved a combined $735 approximately.

About the Course

Curricular changes:

I didn’t have many curricular changes. I will, in the future, need to better adjust worksheets and exam questions to fit the new materials.

Teaching and learning impacts:

I think OER had an impact on both. I had been using the same textbook for years, so adopting OER made me consider other content. For students the greatest impact was that every student had access to the textbook on the first day of class. This never happened with the textbook I used to use.

Textbook Adoption

OER Adoption Process:

I have a role in the Title III Grant that supports OER funding at Utah Tech, and I teach an English course each semester, so I thought it best to use OER in my course as an example to other professors.

Student feedback about using OER:

I didn't have to go through the hassle of buying a textbook and always carrying it around with me.

It made it engaging yet short and simple.

It's easier to access and easier to read.

Not more stuff in my backpack, can open it anywhere.
