Aurora Galeana ENGL 1000 Reading and Writing for Academic Success

I used handouts, worksheets, videos, and online resources. Students save the cost of the textbook with InQuizitive access they used to have to pay for.

Curricular changes:

I created activities for students to practice grammar concepts in class. I also found online articles for them to read and respond to as writing prompts for essays. Much of the work they did in class, I created.

Teaching and learning impacts: 

I was able to tailor the material to my students and to my needs. I was also able to focus on areas I thought students needed more help on or focus on topics most interesting to students.

OER Adoption Process

I wanted students to save money by not having to buy a textbook.

Student feedback about using OER:  

I feel like it’s just easier to stay locked in

They were free, easy to open online and simple to read

With the materials like videos or sheets it was more physical and could see things

better.

I didn't have to pay for a textbook which was nice and I liked that it was more of a

hands on learning with the material than it typically is with other textbooks.

They were more specific and easier to understand

I find it a lot better because I believe instructors can make a course just using stuff

they find on the internet rather than making the students waste money on a textbook

they will never use again.

I was able to follow instructions better as there was a centered focus in the OER

rather than reading pages out of a textbook.

I was more engaged.

I thought the course was well put together. I learned better because of the material compared to

my other courses.

Overall, I believe every class period should do OER because it saves the students money and

there is plenty of information on the internet to make a successful course.
