Jameson Hardy MATH 1010: Intermediate Algebra

About the Textbook

We used OpenStax Intermediate Algebra textbook:

https://openstax.org/details/books/intermediate-algebra-2e

And the Webwork homework software:

About the Course

Curricular changes: The OpenStax textbook aligned very closely with the Pearson textbook we were using prior, so topic wise there was very little change. The main change was the homework software. Functionality remained very similar, but there was some change in the types of questions we asked in the homework. Overall, the changes were minimal.

Teaching and learning impacts:

I have noticed very little difference.

Textbook Adoption

OER Adoption Process

We have been dissatisfied with Pearson’s MyMathLab for quite some time. Our biggest complaint as instructors was the customer service provided and the way in which changes were forced upon us at the whim of the company. We had very little control over what we wanted to do. Secondary to that was the price that students were paying for the textbook and software.

Student feedback about using OER:  There was frustration on the part of the students when the questions did not have explanations on the level of precision (such as how many decimals to round to) the question wanted. Any feedback we got about it, we fixed. Other than that, most feedback was that it felt the same as before.
