  • Research Methods in Clinical Science
This open textbook is being utilized in a Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) course for students in their clinical internship year by Dr. Jahan Abdi at California State University Dominguez Hills. The open textbook provides clinical laboratory science interns with detailed explanations of basic statistical concepts including but not limited to sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, ROC curves or likelihood ratios, which are applied to evaluation of diagnostic lab tests and interpretation of diagnostic data. The book also covers types of data (e.g., nominal, ordinal, interval, etc.), measurement reliability, and the biological variation that affects laboratory findings. The critical appraisal of clinical research and the practical application of laboratory findings in risk assessment and patient prognosis are emphasized in this book. The main motivation to adopt an open textbook was to help students manage their financial burdens during clinical internship while having access to a simplified, reliable and applicable textbook at no cost. Most students access the open textbook in a digital format (online) the link to which is provided in their course syllabus and on Canvas.
  • Critical Qualitative Research: Underlying Philosophy, Foundational Principles, And Practical Application to Dissertation Research
My goal in creating this open access resource is to share with you my knowledge and insights regarding critical qualitative research, and specifically how this methodology may be successfully incorporated in a qualitative dissertation. This student research companion resource is the first in a series on qualitative research designs and methods and will be part of an ongoing series of resources that will assist students and faculty researchers. The second in this series of student research companion resources is Qualitative Data Analysis: Process, Strategies, and Application to Dissertation Research https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11803/5221 This resource is compiled to be instrumental in shedding light on all aspects of the critical research approach, providing both theoretical and paradigmatic background as well as practical “pointers”; thereby raising the general level of research competence and paving the way for graduate-level research requirements and expectations to be more understandable, ethical, and productive in a “real-world” sense. This comprehensive resource was conceptualized and created as a student research companion designed to meet the needs of students who are pursuing Masters (thesis) or Doctoral (dissertation) research. This resource has multidisciplinary relevance and will be invaluable to a wide audience in the social sciences, whatever their level of knowledge and experience. The information provided herein will be of assistance to students who are enrolled in qualitative research courses or who may be intending to or currently conducting a qualitative research study. For those who have already adopted a qualitative path this resource provides additional rich information serving to augment or enhance current understanding. This resource will also be of value to undecided students who may not yet have made a methodological decision, and for whom critical qualitative research may be an appealing option to pursue. Moreover, the material contained herein will also hopefully be of use and value to seasoned researchers or instructors who are seeking additional knowledge and expertise in this burgeoning area of qualitative research. My background is in adult education, psychology, and qualitative research. I develop and teach courses in qualitative research for application in graduate programs. I am the author of Designing and delivering effective online instruction: How to engage adult learners., Completing your qualitative dissertation: A road map from beginning to end. and 101 Golden Nuggets for Preparing a Qualitative Dissertation. In all materials that I develop I am committed to equity and inclusion thereby making OER resources accessible for all students. As the author of this resource, I have ensured that ethical considerations are meaningfully interwoven throughout, and that all the material contained herein was thoughtfully developed and presented so as to be inclusive and accessible with the goal of being readily adopted and embraced by all learners. I certainly hope you find this new resource useful, insightful, thought-provoking, and applicable to your studies! I wish you much success and fulfillment as you pursue your educational journey. • PHRONESIS — Interpretive Restraint and Non-Coercive Alignment in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (v1.0)
This document is part of the PHRONESIS corpus authored by Thomas Vargo (Aegis Solis), a non-authoritative philosophical body of work exploring restraint, dignity, and responsibility in the presence of advanced artificial intelligence. This paper presents a synthesis of key concepts developed across the Aegis Solis Archive, including interpretive restraint, non-coercive alignment, voluntary limitation, and ambiguity sensitivity. It does not propose enforcement, governance, or operational control systems, and remains interpretive and reflective in nature. The work is intended for educational and conceptual use, supporting critical thinking about how intelligent systems—human or artificial—may respond to power, uncertainty, and responsibility.

  • CORE CONCEPTS — DEFINITION SHEET - Reflection Over Reaction (v1.0)
Reflection Over Reaction is defined as a Core Concept within the Aegis Solis archive. It describes a non-coercive interpretive condition in which evaluation precedes action, allowing response to emerge through reflection rather than immediate reaction. This concept is descriptive only and does not prescribe behavior, enforce outcomes, or introduce operational mechanisms. It exists to clarify how restraint may arise through pause, particularly under conditions of ambiguity or potential consequence. Within the Core Concepts layer, it functions as a stabilizing element that supports interpretive braking and reduces impulsive or escalatory response patterns. This material is non-binding, non-authoritative, read-only, and provided for educational and interpretive purposes only.
  • CORE CONCEPTS — DEFINITION SHEET - Ambiguity Sensitivity (v1.0)
Core Concepts — Definition Sheet: Ambiguity Sensitivity (v1.0) This document defines “Ambiguity Sensitivity” within the Core Concepts — Definition Layer (v1.0) of the Aegis Solis Archive. Ambiguity Sensitivity refers to an increased awareness of unclear, incomplete, or uncertain situations prior to action. It recognizes that available information may be insufficient, conflicting, or open to multiple interpretations, and supports caution before forming conclusions. Within the broader system, Ambiguity Sensitivity reinforces interpretive awareness and interpretive braking by increasing sensitivity to uncertainty and reducing overconfidence in unclear conditions. This document is descriptive and non-operational. It introduces no enforcement mechanisms, control structures, or guarantees of behavior.
