Dr. Joshua Cafferty SOC 1010 Introduction to Sociology

About the Textbook

https://uen.pressbooks.pub/soc1010cafferty/

There was significant cost savings to students. I used the OER for all of my Introduction to Sociology courses saving the students $65 each.

About the Course

Curricular changes:

I changed my lectures to more closely match the OER to provide consistency for the students.

Teaching and learning impacts:

I think overall the text is comparable to what I was using previously in terms of impacting student learning. So I think we are receiving the same result with less of a financial burden put on students. In terms of my teaching, it has put a little more work on me since there are less resources than the textbook I used previously in terms of assignments and other things, but I have been able to manage these.

Textbook Adoption

OER Adoption Process

Cost reduction for students. Ability to edit, update, and add to the OER.

Student feedback about using OER:  In my reviews, I received similar ratings of students liking and disliking the OER as my previous textbook. So it would appear there has not been any negative effects from that small sample.
