StatCrunch Information

This class uses the statistical software package StatCrunch. Students can enroll in StatCrunch here. 

In order to access the data sets, students will need to join the Math 105 group in StatCrunch. After enrolling in StatCrunch, students can join the Math 105 group by clicking join group or by searching groups using "math 105 chico" as a prompt.

Course Instructions

Thank you for your interest in using this AI-integrated Open Educational Resource (OER) for Introductory Statistics. The goal of these materials is to help instructors incorporate artificial intelligence into an introductory statistics course in a purposeful, responsible, and pedagogically meaningful way while maintaining a low-cost learning environment.

The course combines:

  • AI-assisted instructional materials using Custom GPTs
  • Traditional course notes
  • AI-guided weekly learning activities
  • AI-assisted homework
  • AI literacy activities
  • StatCrunch for statistical analyses
  • Active-learning experiences that emphasize conceptual understanding, data literacy, and AI literacy

The materials are designed so that instructors may adopt the entire course or select individual components that fit their own teaching style.

Course Components: The instructional materials are organized into several categories.

1. Custom GPT Lessons: Each major lesson includes a Custom GPT that guides students through new concepts using interactive conversations. Rather than watching lecture videos, students learn by answering questions, receiving hints, exploring examples, and working through concepts with the AI tutor.

Each Custom GPT is paired with:

  • Course notes
  • Examples
  • Practice questions
  • StatCrunch activities when appropriate

2. Course Notes: Each lesson contains traditional written notes.

These notes:

  • correspond directly to the Custom GPT lesson
  • provide formulas and definitions
  • include worked examples
  • serve as a reference after students complete the GPT lesson

3. Weekly AI Activities: Each week includes guided activities completed through Custom GPTs.

4. AI-Assisted Homework: Homework assignments combine traditional statistical problem solving with AI-supported learning. Students use AI as a learning partner rather than an answer generator.

5. AI Literacy Activities: AI literacy is intentionally integrated throughout the course.The objective is to prepare students to use AI responsibly in future coursework and professional settings.

6. StatCrunch Activities StatCrunch is used throughout the course athe statistical software package.

Important Information About Custom GPTs: If you are using ChatGPT Edu, OpenAI currently does not allow Custom GPTs to be shared across institutions or organizations. For this reason, the Custom GPTs included in this OER are provided as downloadable instruction files rather than shared GPT links. Fortunately, creating a Custom GPT requires only a few minutes.

Once created, your GPT can be reused every semester. An added benefit is that you can edit the custom GPT to suit the needs of your class.

Creating a Custom GPT

For each lesson you will find:

  • the course notes
  • a Custom GPT instruction file

To create your own GPT:

Step 1: Download the Custom GPT instruction file.

Step 2: Log into ChatGPT using an account that supports Custom GPT creation.

Step 3: Select Create a GPT.

Step 4:  Copy the provided instructions into the GPT configuration. If the materials include uploaded knowledge files, upload those files into the Knowledge section of the GPT.

Step 5: Give the GPT a descriptive name and save the custom GPT.

Step 6: Test the GPT by asking several questions before assigning it to students.
