Placement & Leveling for Teachers

Before a course starts, every teacher faces the same two questions: what level is each learner really at, and which materials match that level? The free Simmonds placement test answers the first in about 15 minutes per learner - no registration, no email address, and learners see their own result immediately. It is a placement instrument, not a certificate: it tells you where to start, not what to print on a CV.

Using results with a class: 1. Have each learner take the test before the first session (any device, about 15 minutes). 2. Collect self-reported levels and expect a spread - a "B1 class" typically runs A2-B2. 3. Match materials by level tag: the Lesson Library page of this guide is organised A1-C2, and every worksheet carries its level. 4. Re-test after a term. Level movement (for example A2 to B1) is a concrete, external measure of progress - motivating for learners and, in company courses, useful for reporting.

A note on honesty: self-administered tests can be gamed, but adult learners under-report as often as they over-report. Treat the result as a starting hypothesis and adjust after the first session.
