Exercise
1. Ask students to generate a list of financial issues that new adults have to address (e.g., housing, roommates, food, transportation, insurance, health, romantic relationships, children, credit).
2. Assign students to small groups to research a specific financial issue that arises from independent living, by extracting information from http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/topics/
3. Ask each group to identify the main factors to consider for their issue, and ways to address those factors. Ask students to post their findings in an online collaborative site (e.g., Google slide deck card, blog, wiki, online discussion board)
4. Ask students to read their peers’ findings, and pose a question for more information.
5. Ask groups to answer the additional question.
6. As a culminating experience, have each group create a written scenario about a financial problem, and make recommendations on effective ways to solve the problem. 7. Ask groups to exchange their scenarios (without the recommendations) to solve. Afterwards, compare solutions.
8. Debrief the class. Ask them how the findings will inform their personal financial plans.
